Type Camp International

TypeCamp—LONDON
9-16 May 2008
Want to go on the next Type Camp excursion to England? The London event will be 9-16 May 2008. We'll have behind-the-scenes visit to the St Bride Library and the University of Reading Typography Department Archives, visit area design programs, experience London's typographic treasures, and conclude our visit with the famous St Bride Library conference.

Type Camp—INFO DESIGN
10-15 August 2008
We'll bring a bit of the Bauhaus to Canada with the head Info Design instructor, Jay Rutherford. Jay is a Professor of Visual Communications at the Faculty of Art and Design at the Bauhaus University in Weimar, Germany.

What is info design?
Information design is about clear and efficient, and usually honest, communication and not about creative self-expression or commerce. In other words, the goal of information design is not to make art or to sell toothpaste.

The designer becomes a kind of Houdini, disappearing from the scene while the message steps forward. This camp will introduce concepts of information design, discuss theories of communication and human factors, and help participants find new motivations within the information design realm and enhance their current design practice.

TypeCamp—INDIA
18-30 Aug 2008
TypeCamp India will be based in the city of Chennai (formerly Madras) on the South Eastern coast of India. There will be short trips to nearby towns and a trip to Bangalore to participate in a joint project with local Indian graphic design students.

We'll have a studio class every morning and will fill the afternoon with visiting local publishing houses, meeting and working with street typographers, doing type walks in local markets and working with local silk-screen printers. We will also visit ancient historic sites and learn a bit about the local Indian context and customs. You'll create and produce projects that can build upon or even divert from your communication design background. This is a trip for the intermediate or advanced student or professional

The instructors and leaders for TypeCamp India are Dr Rathna Ramanathan, the Head of Critical Context for the MA Communication Design Degree at London's Central St Martins, and Dr Shelley Gruendler, founder of Type Camp.

Fee information and registration deadlines will be posted shortly.

Type Camp ROME—TBA 2009
Enjoy eight days in the city where modern typography was born. We will walk the streets to view first-hand the inscriptional letterforms that have survived over two thousand years. The birth and expansion of the Roman letterform will be discussed through lectures, tours, and plenty of gelato!
