They say:

“I can't think of a better way to learn. On a tiny Gulf island in the sun, far from work and traffic: drawing, learning about type, minutely scrutinizing letterforms; where they start, how they move, and creating new ones. Type Camp is fundamentally different from any class. It is a learning vacation, so instead of going home each day and dividing your focus, you just think about type. For a week. And sleep in, hike, swim, lie in the sun, and eat well. For a week. Prepare to have your perspectives delightfully altered.”

“I had such a great time. It was amazing to be around people who were interested in talking type and not glaze over at the mention of kerning and tracking. I really feel like I am on the right path now and that was 100% because of Type Camp. It was such a unique experience and I think anyone interested in type should attend and see where it takes them, they may be surprised.”

Type Camp India
Chennai, Tamil Nadu
10–20 December 2009
Dr Rathna Ramanathan & Dr Shelley Gruendler

Combine your type education with your travels! Type Camp India will provide you with an opportunity to investigate and create while experiencing one of the most visually rich cultures in the world. Every morning is a studio and every afternoon is a workshop. You’ll visit local publishing houses, meet and work with street typographers, hold type walks in local markets, learn Tamil Calligraphy, and experiment with silkscreening, bookbinding, and printing. This is a camp that cares about exploration and context within typography. With typographic experts Dr Shelley Gruendler and Dr Rathna Ramanathan, you’ll expand your typographic abilities to create projects that will make your work stand out from your peers.

This camp is over. The next Type Camp India is tentatively scheduled for 2012.
