Type Camp London

Type Camp London
22–28 May 2010
Tiffany Wardle & Dr Shelley Gruendler

Type Camp London will start with the famous London Typographic Walking Tour led by Catherine Dixon of Central St Martins. You’ll see living examples of historical lettering while hearing Dr Dixon’s expertise and enjoying the character of the city.

Day two is dedicated to the collections of St Bride where you’ll turn the pages in a Kelmscott Chaucer, see a Polyglot Bible from the 1600s, and even see Eric Gill’s sketches for Gill Sans. Head Curator and Librarian Nigel Roche will bring to light many of the secrets and valuable items in the back stacks of this unique collection.

The third day will be at the widely-respected University of Reading Typography archives with the energetic historian Martin Andrews exhibiting treasures from collections of many respected typographers. From coffin plates to copperplates, you’ll see in person what you’ve only seen in books before.

Day four will involve a visit to Oxford with Martin where we’ll see the lettering collections in the newly-renovated Ashmolean Museum, visit the world-famous Oxford University Press, and of course take time to see all the quaint back streets and sights of this wonderfully British city.

Days five and six of Type Camp London will conclude the week with attendance at the 9th Annual St Bride Conference. During the day, you will hear talks about new ideas and approaches in the profession today and at night, you’ll be at the parties with those famous names. Dr Shelley Gruendler and Tiffany Wardle will be with you every step of the way helping you to see new things and get a better sense of the historical wonders in the graphic communication profession.

Fee of $1960 includes:
lunch every day; admission to the St Bride conference; admission to all camp events; transportation to Reading from London; transportation to Oxford from London and all tutorials and tours. You are responsible for getting yourself to London, housing in London, transportation within London, and other meals beyond lunch.
