Some type designers are out there pumping their wares and their skills, and some are hidden away, quietly working on type projects. Ross Mills is one of the latter. You learn a lot from observing type, and more from using it, but you really uncover the secrets of typography when you start designing typefaces—particularly text families. While designers of quirky, one-off display faces are relatively common, designers of quality text faces are relatively rare. Ross Mills has designed and brought to market many seen and unseen text families, with more under development. He has developed fonts for Inuktitut, Cree and Cherokee, and as partner in Tiro Typeworks, has made a specialty of type for international language support. Trusted for both his aesthetic and technical skill by Adobe Systems, Apple Computer, Linotype Library, and Microsoft Corporation, it is safe to say the man is an expert. He won’t come to us, so we must go to him. Galiano Island is Ross’s home and workplace, so this is a rare opportunity to meet and learn from this enigmatic type designer.
